European solar energy ushered in another record year. SolarPower Europe estimates that European PV will increase by 47% in 2022, from 28.1 GW in 2021 to 41.4 GW this year. Germany has the largest installed capacity at 7.9 GW, followed by Spain at 7.5 GW and Poland at 4.9 GW. The top 10 solar energy markets in Europe have increased by at least 1 gigawatt for the first time.

According to SolarPower Europe (SPE)'s new EU solar market outlook report for 2022-2026, Europe added 41.4 GW of new solar capacity in 2022. The annual installed capacity increased by nearly 50% from 28.1 GW in 2021. This is another record-breaking year for solar energy. The African continent increased its capacity by 10 gigawatts in 2021, 10 GW more than the SPE forecast.

Germany once again installed more solar energy than any other European country, an increase of 7.9 gigawatts. Spain followed with 7.5 GW of new installed capacity, and Poland ranked in the top three with 4.9 GW. Poland shifted from net metering to net billing in April 2022, together with high electricity prices and the rapidly growing market segment of utility scale, which contributed to its outstanding performance in the third place.

According to SPE's estimation, the Netherlands (4 GW), France (2.7 GW), Italy (2.6 GW), Portugal (2.5 GW), Denmark (1.5 GW), Greece (1.4 GW) and Sweden (1.1 GW) ranked among the top 10 solar energy, all higher than the GW milestone. Although the top five markets of the EU remain unchanged compared with 2021, Portugal and Sweden entered the top 10 at the expense of Hungary and Austria. Portugal joined the GW Club for the first time, thanks to the impressive annual growth rate of 251%, which is mainly due to the substantial growth of solar energy in the scale of utilities.

On the other hand, Italy finally returned to GW Group after increasing about 2.6 GW and 174% year on year.

Due to the state-owned Superbonus 110% incentive plan and high electricity price, the attractiveness of the self-consumption business model has been improved, and the small-scale photovoltaic market segment has boosted the market.

According to SPE data, the total solar capacity of the EU has increased by 25%, from 167.5 GW in 2021 to 208.9 GW in 2022. According to its "most likely" situation, the industry organization predicts that the annual growth rate of photovoltaic in Europe will be 53.6 gigawatts in 2023 and 85 gigawatts in 2026. This means that the EU solar energy market will more than double in four years and reach 484 GW by 2026.

Walburg Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, said that the figures clearly showed that solar energy provided a lifeline for Europe in the energy and climate crisis. No other energy is as fast growing or reliable as solar energy. People are building a safe, green and prosperous Europe on the basis of solar energy.

The report also highlighted five key areas to prepare Europe for solar energy: expanding the solar installer base, maintaining regulatory stability, improving grid stability, simplifying administrative procedures and strengthening European manufacturing.

With the intensification of the energy crisis, it is time for Europeans to take solar energy seriously.

Aker then called for "more electricians and stable electricity market regulation. Europe powered by solar energy can only be based on smoother administrative processes, faster grid connection and flexible supply chain.
