On the evening of November 20, the 2022 Qatar World Cup opened. The songs of the previous World Cup are sung again and the mascot reappears, full of feelings!

The remarkable project is the 800 megawatt photovoltaic power station in Al Kasa, Qatar, which can meet 10% of the peak power demand in Qatar, and greatly increase the proportion of renewable energy in Qatar's energy consumption. It not only provides power security for the World Cup, but also is an important measure for Qatar to fulfill its commitment to host a "Green World Cup".

The power station is located in the desert 80 kilometers west of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The park covers an area of 10 square kilometers, which is equivalent to about 1400 football fields. A total of more than 2 million solar panels have been installed, making use of the region's unique solar and thermal resources for power production. It is the first non fossil fuel power station in Qatar, the world's third largest single photovoltaic power generation project, and the world's largest photovoltaic project using tracking systems and double-sided modules.

It is reported that the Alcassa PV project can provide Qatar with about 1.8 billion kilowatt hours of clean power every year, meet the annual power consumption of about 300000 households, and reduce carbon dioxide by about 900000 tons every year. The project has far-reaching significance in Qatar and even the entire Middle East region, and can meet the peak power demand of Qatar by more than 10%.

At the launch ceremony last month, Qabi, the State Minister of Energy Affairs of Qatar, pointed out that after grid connection, the project will provide energy support for Qatar with competitive electricity prices. By diversifying the sources of electric energy, the efficiency of energy utilization can be improved, which can not only increase the proportion of renewable energy utilization, but also help to achieve diversified development of the national economy.

Public information shows that the total investment of Alcasa PV project is 417 million dollars. EPC of the power station is contracted by Guizhou Engineering Co., Ltd. of China Power Construction Group, and the project will be started in July 2020.

This project is also the world's largest photovoltaic project using tracking system and double-sided modules. Longji "Hi-MO 4" double-sided modules are used for all modules, and Sungrow Power Supply provides a full set of 1500V inverter solutions for them.

Li Jun, the site construction manager of Powerchina, said, "This project provides Qatar with a greener and more stable power supply. The 800 MW photovoltaic area of this project uses Chinese equipment, which accounts for more than 60% of the total project investment. This further strengthens the market share of domestic brands in the Middle East, gives full play to the advantages of the integration of the whole industry chain, and creates a good overseas image of Chinese enterprises."

Project introduction

Qatar's 800 MW photovoltaic project

Qatar's 800 MW photovoltaic project is by far the third largest single photovoltaic power station in the world, and the world's largest photovoltaic project using tracking systems and double-sided modules. It is also the first non fossil fuel power station in Qatar, and is part of Qatar's "2030 National Vision". It will be fully put into production before the 2022 World Cup. The project is divided into two phases. It is expected to complete the construction and grid connection of the first phase of 400 MW in April 2021, In April 2022, the project will be connected to the grid with full capacity. After the project is put into operation, it can meet 10% of Qatar's peak power demand.

Project introduction

Environmental protection first before performance

the protection of animals and plants

Qatar is located in a desert area with a fragile ecological environment. Once it is damaged, it will have an irreversible impact. At the beginning of project implementation, the protection of animals and plants has been given priority. According to the provisions of the Qatar Environmental Protection Law and relevant policy requirements, the Project Department has prepared the corresponding animal and plant migration plan in advance, arranged them in a new livable environment, and strived to minimize the impact of the project construction on the local ecological environment, and strive to build an environment-friendly and resource saving photovoltaic power station.

Lay a good foundation to ensure accessibility

Lay a good foundation

The PV project site is located in the desert hinterland 70km west of Doha. From the main road to the construction site, the terrain is desert, and the road conditions are poor. There is no access road for large transport vehicles at the project site. In order to ensure the smooth transportation of materials required for project construction and various production and living materials into the site, and to ensure the basic transportation work during the subsequent construction peak, the Project Department actively organizes the road foundation construction. Since the end of August, the access road has been built. After excavation, landfill, leveling, compaction and other work, the construction of the access road has been completed.

Overcoming difficulties to complete the node

Overcoming difficulties

Overcoming difficulties and completing the node With the gradual progress of Qatar's epidemic relief policy, the COVID-19 has made the government's entry approval procedures for foreign personnel complicated and time-consuming, which once caused a shortage of front-line personnel at the initial stage of the project. In the face of tight construction period and heavy tasks, the leadership of the Project Department actively sought countermeasures, tried to find ways to strengthen communication with the Owner, explained the difficulties of the Project Department in detail, actively sought the support and help of the Owner, and made every effort to open up the channels for personnel entry. At the same time, the Project Department has accelerated the construction of the site office. Since the commencement of the site office in early September, the leadership of the Project Department has led the personnel of the Construction Department, the Environmental Safety Department and other departments to take root on the site, wear the stars around the clock, strictly control the construction progress and quality, and ensure that the site office can be built within the expected time. After intensive construction, the site office has been initially built and will be put into full use in early November.

The Owner highly appreciated the inspection

On October 23, the project owner's representative and his delegation made a special trip to Al Kasa, Qatar to inspect the progress of the 800MW solar photovoltaic project. The Owner's team appreciated the phased achievements of the site geological survey, site topographic survey and positioning pile, migration of animals and plants, construction of access roads, site office construction and other work carried out by the Project Department in the early stage, and fully affirmed the performance of the project. The Project Department said that it would continue to actively promote the construction of the project site and make efforts to put the first non fossil fuel power station project in Qatar into operation at an early date.
