Developers could install 14.1 GW of new solar power capacity in 2023, with more than 260,000 balcony solar modules already in service, Germany's federal grid authority (Bundesnetzagentur) said.

Klaus Müller, president of Bundesnetzagentur, said, "We have taken a big step forward, especially in photovoltaics, where generation capacity has almost doubled compared to the previous year."

Bundesnetzagentur said it expects to install 14.1 GW of new PV capacity in 2023, mainly from rooftop systems. The agency noted that Bavaria could account for 3.5 GW of the total installed capacity.

Cumulative installed PV capacity in Germany is expected to reach about 81.7 GW by December.

The agency reported that balcony solar systems will triple to reach 260,000 units by 2023, accounting for 1.5% of new PV capacity.

Solar accounts for nearly half of Germany's installed renewable energy capacity at 17 GW, while net wind capacity reaches 2.9 GW in 2023, surpassing the previous year, Bundesnetzagentur said.

As for onshore wind, we have not yet reached the desired target," Müller said. But what makes me optimistic is that more licenses will be issued in 2023 and that the results will be seen on more new buildings."

A 300MW offshore wind farm comes on stream in the Baltic Sea in 2023. Renewable energy generation capacity in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea now totals 8.5 GW cumulatively. In 2023, the biomass plant expansion will double in size to 120 MW, bringing the total operating capacity of such systems to around 900 GW.
