40kw Off-grid solar power system with Lithium battery backup for a government warehouse in the Marshall Islands
Why solar systems are better than diesel generatorsWhy solar systems are better than diesel generators
This is an Off-grid solar power system with Lithium battery backup for a government warehouse in the Marshall Islands.
The system has a power capacity of 40kW, a battery storage capacity of 140kwh and a solar panel power generation of over 200kwh per day.
The client initially chose to use a diesel generator because of the unstable local electricity supply and long power cuts.
During the use of diesel generators, the customer found that the subsequent cost of diesel generators continued to increase due to factors such as fuel and manual operation and maintenance. And the use of diesel generators is noisy and not environmentally friendly.
Therefore, the customer looked for solar energy, a new energy generation method.
Namkoo Power designed a solar power system based on the customer's daily electricity consumption and the power of the load used.
The solar system was manufactured, transported and installed and worked well. It helped the client to avoid power outages due to the obsolescence of the diesel generators, and also solved the problem of unstable mains power and long power cuts.
In the absence of electricity, should I choose a diesel generator or a solar system?
Primarily from the following perspectives :
First: the cost of solar generators versus diesel generators
In the long run, the cost of solar power is much lower than diesel generators.
The initial cost of a solar power system will be higher than that of a diesel generator system. This is often the reason why people install diesel generators rather than opting for solar power. However, we must look beyond the initial cost to fully compare solar generators to diesel generators.
Once installed, solar generators require little or no maintenance or additional costs. There is no need to purchase fuel, as the solar energy provides the fuel for the system.
This is not the case with diesel generators. Once installed, the generator requires regular maintenance by a professional. Diesel generators require fuel and this cost is increasing. Due to wear and tear, mobile generator components must be replaced frequently.
Second: Convenience of solar and diesel generators
Convenience is another factor to consider when considering solar generators for power generation. And solar generators are more convenient.
Buying and installing a large solar energy may not be as convenient, however, as the market grows, this will no longer be an issue. Solar systems have no moving parts that wear out and do not require lubrication. Once installed, solar energy requires almost no maintenance and the user can almost forget about it.
Diesel generators are widely available and easy to procure and install. However, the ease of installation is reduced and the generator must be monitored frequently to ensure there is enough fuel available. When used as a conventional power source it must be replenished frequently, fuel must be ordered and delivered, or the fuel must be delivered by the owner. The system must be serviced twice a year, including filter changes, oil changes, adjustments and a full inspection of the entire unit, and worn parts must be replaced.
Third: Efficiency of solar generators versus diesel generators
The battle between solar generators and diesel generators also includes the question of efficiency. Which is more cost effective? The facts seem to point evenly towards solar generators.
A solar generator is received free of charge via a battery panel and stored in the battery. It is ready for use when needed, but the electricity is stored when usage decreases.
Diesel generators run continuously regardless of how much power is used in a given period of time. When they are running, they consume expensive fuel. Diesel generators must continue to run when there is insufficient demand for electricity in the middle of the day.
Fourth: Reliability of solar generators versus diesel generators
Some people believe that when comparing solar generators and diesel generators we must compare the reliability factor, and some would argue that diesel generators win in this respect.
Solar energy is very reliable in areas where the sun shines brightly more than 300 days a year, and less reliable in areas where the sun shines less, or during cloudy and stormy periods. The system will continue to be powered by rechargeable batteries, but will eventually stop working.
Diesel generator systems do not rely on sunlight, however, they do rely on fuel. If storms or other disasters prevent people from replenishing their fuel supply, diesel generators can also be rendered useless.
Fifth: Environmental friendliness of solar vs. diesel generators
Finally, eco-friendliness must be considered when discussing solar energy and generators. In other words, which is friendlier to the environment, solar or diesel generators? The obvious answer is still a solar generator.
Solar generators work without emissions, there is no pollution from fuel production, there are no greenhouse gases and it is very clean, this is because solar energy uses renewable energy sources.
A major disadvantage of the use of diesel generators remains the emissions and the environment, the fuel they use, diesel, is extracted from fossil fuels and there are emissions from the production and use of the fuel. Diesel generator storm fees can cause health hazards in diesel generator exhaust and are a major source of air pollution and high sulphur levels.
